Continue reading to learn the ins and outs of PRP therapy, including how it works and what patients can expect should they decide to undergo treatment.
What Is PRP Hair Restoration?
PRP is a non-surgical treatment that harvests platelets from the patient’s blood in order to naturally stimulate hair growth.
It is an excellent option for women and men who are concerned about hair loss and thinning and wish to avoid surgery, incisions, anesthesia, or artificial-looking results.
How Does PRP Hair Restoration Work?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is chock full of growth factors and an essential component of wound healing.
When injected into the scalp, at the level of the hair follicle, PRP stimulates dormant hair follicles and prolongs the active phase of the growth cycle. This results in naturally fuller, thicker, and longer hair.
What Can Patients in the Olney, MD Area Expect from PRP?
PRP hair restoration is performed in the comfort of our office and typically takes 60-75 minutes.
At the beginning of the treatment, a sample of blood is collected from the patient and placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins the blood in order to separate platelet rich plasma from other blood components.
Prior to administering PRP, the scalp is injected with a local anesthetic. We also offer Pro-Nox, which is a patient-controlled nitrous oxide, to further alleviate anxiety and discomfort.
Finally, the purified PRP is placed in a syringe and carefully injected into the scalp. This portion of the treatment takes about 15 minutes.
We will then place a cold compress on your scalp, for approximately 15 minutes, to soothe the area and allow you time to decompress.
How Many Platelet Rich Plasma Treatments Will I Need?
Most patients benefit from a series of five PRP treatments.
The first three treatments are scheduled six weeks apart, and the fourth and fifth sessions are scheduled three months apart.
Upon completion of the initial series, maintenance treatments are recommended at six-to-12 month intervals.
